secound day analysis
Analyse of a second day
Introduction
This short video is
about a young girl and her dramatic changes in a short period time. The purpose
of this advert is to reflect on the other children around the world such as
Syria and Iraq where people and families had a good life but now it all changed
for the worst when the war started. This tore a lot of families and killed
almost half their population in Syria and Iraq. The first thing we see is a
young girl having a birthday party and a massive cake. The young girl presents
all the kids in the war and through the advert, it shows the kid where she was
happy, and she had a family. However later everything changed, and they become
poor.
Setting
The setting took place
in London, but the setting connotes to Syria which is shown in this
establishing shot. This shot was used
for the boy's expression and the background at the same time which is extremely
effective because it shows the environment he is in.
Costume
Throughout the video,
her clothes start to change every few seconds which shows time passing by. At
the begging of the video, he was wearing nice bright clothes which connotes to
her being in a good financial area and her being able to wear nice clothes.
However, through ought the video you can see that her clothes become more grey
and dirty which symbolises change of state and financial state. After they
moved into hideout you can see she stayed in her school uniform which shows two
things either they must keep moving around to make sure they don’t get hit from
the ‘war’ or its because they can’t buy any clothes. This two ideas inks to
Syria because this boy in the advert tells a story about nearly all the
children in Syria what they had to go through which is upsetting to see.
Props
One of the props used
is a birthday cake and it symbolises happiness and quality of work. Even the
quality of the cake and how it was made shows how they were having a good life
and it was a time of celebration. However, after a while in the advert the same
boy is one year older than last time and after all that corruption and the
situation he is in shows how his life changed dramatically and when it was his
birthday he got a small cake in a dirty plate which connotes to poverty.
Another prop used is fake hair which is used to show the kid touching her hair
and it falls out. This could have been done by all the chemicals form the
‘war’. This connotes to the kids in Syria where there are always in some sort
of danger where either they are losing a limb, or they have a sickness of some
sort.
Lighting
The lighting has many
connotations such as if its bright then it could suggest luxury, but it the
lighting is dark then it suggests something bad or could even suggest poverty.
On the last 10 seconds of the advert, there wasn’t much lighting and the mum of
the kid was using a torch which connotes to having no money to afford the
light.
Sound
The sound is the main
part of the advert because it implies what’s going on and exaggerates tension
and makes the video more interesting to watch.
The narration from the news which covers up the dialogue shows that
everything is not a lie and the screaming from the background following up with
the blowing up of the bombs shows realistic features of what Syria looks/ feels
like. There weren’t many diegetic sounds because it was bombarded by the
non-diegetic sounds which are screams etc.
Editing
through the advert a
series of jump-cut has been used to amplify her stages through the 1:19-minute
advert and in each jump shot shoes a different stage in her life. All the shots
are symbolising different days and they have a quick cut rate which is how fast
each shot is. They do this because it is unforeseeable, and it is more
effective to the audience who sees it.
Good analysis. Be sure to proofread, checking through grammar and punctuation. Needs to include more about camera shots and angles. Could elaborate more on editing, such as use of match cuts. Add some stills. Very strong introduction and mise en scene, well done. Gabrielle / Vanessa
